The day of the surgery and the following 48 hours
Medication :Follow dentist prescription.
Bleeding : Clench your teeth on sterile gauze for one hour. Do not touch the treated area with your fingers or tongue. Minimize physical activity 48 hours after surgery. It is normal for your saliva to be stained with blood for about 24 hours. If bleeding persists, continue to bite down on sterile gauze. If you notice heavy bleeding, avoid spitting and repeat the pressure for 15 minutes. However, if bleeding still persists, contact us.
Mouthwash : Do not rinse, spit, or suck for 48 hours after surgery. Gentle rinsing (do not spit, let the liquid drain into the sink) is recommended after meals to dislodge food, but only starting 24 hours after surgery. Do not brush your teeth in the area of the graft until the follow-up appointment. Do not use commercial toothpaste or mouthwash in the area of the graft until Dr. Seica has cleared it for you.
Smoking : Ideally, do not smoke for a minimum of 48 hours after surgery. Smoking will increase the healing time and the risk of complications.
Swelling : Slight post-operative swelling is normal for the first 3 days after surgery. This will gradually decrease. Apply ice to the face, opposite the operated area for about 20 minutes, then repeat as needed after a 20 minute break. A bruise may appear on the skin, do not worry, it will disappear within a week.
Diet : Any soft food that is not difficult to chew is allowed. Avoid foods with small grains or pits (e.g. rice, raspberries) or hard foods (e.g. nuts). Opt for soft, smooth foods such as pasta, soup, plain yogurt. Avoid hot liquids and spicy foods for the first 48 hours after the procedure. Also, do not drink through a straw, as this causes a sucking motion..
Avoid overexertion and all sports activities.
The following days
- After meals, gently brush your teeth (without toothpaste) excluding the surgical area and stitches.
- Do not floss in the graft area for the first 3 weeks, or until the dentiste allows you to do so.
- Gently clean the surgical site with Chlorexhidine and a Q-tip, 3 to 4 times a day.
- To rinse your mouth, use Chlorexhidine mouthwash (in the event you run out of mouthwash, use a mixture of ½ tsp. salt in a glass of warm water). Do not use commercial mouthwash.
- The stitches are non-absorbable, but will be removed after 2 weeks. A bandage is put on the stitches to protect them.
This paste must remain in place for at least 24 hours and will be removed by the dentist or it will fall off by itself.
